Production was halted in March 2020 due to government restrictions
Synopsis
A retired CIA agent is hunted by both the agency he once worked for and his own nightmares when an unknown man suddenly visits him after nearly three decades. During this time, Jeff Bridges was diagnosed and treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
After his recovery, production on the series resumed
Bridges described the return in a July 2022 podcast as returning after a “long weekend.” Featured at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (2024). This show starts super strong with great action and a slow unfolding of the backstory that leaves you very curious.
Lithgow and Bridges are excellent
Once you get caught up by episode 4, things don’t go so well. Shawcat is a sort of anchor, delivering each line in an almost monotone.
None of the characters are particularly lovable
As the plot development and action slows down after a few episodes, space is taken up by a lot of clumsy dialogue. It seems clear that the writers tried to recreate the style of The Counselor, which was scripted by Cormac McCarthy, but they didn’t do a particularly good job of it.
I’ll keep watching and hope it gets better
The more literary style of The Counselor confused many viewers. How much more so will this be the case with a poor copy.
